Grants and Loans
The Parish Council has powers to award grants to local community organisations and charities. Depending on what the grant is for, the individual power is either listed in on our page "The Powers of Parish Councils" or if not covered under these powers, can be granted under Section 137 of the Local Government Act 1972.
Section 137 allows the Parish Council to spend a limited amount on activities it is not otherwise empowered to do, but which it considers to be in the interests of the area of Hughenden Parish or its inhabitants, and which would produce a benefit equal to the grant that is given. The section 137 limit on the Parish Council takes the form of an amount per registered elector and is reviewed annually by central government.
We give both major and minor grants. A minor grant is for anything under £1000 and can be applied for at any time in the year. Larger grants need to be applied for in the September prior to the finacial year in which the work is to be done. The most we can give as a grant is £5000 for any one project and we can not give more than 20% of the total cost of the works. Our Grants & Loans Policy can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
There are certain minor grants that the Parish Council awards annually to the following;
- The five residents magazines in the parish
- The five village halls in the parish (& playfields where they have one)
- Great Kingshill Cricket Club, Hughenden Valley Boys FC and Widmer End United Junior FC - all for grounds maintenance
We also consider the provision of a loan for a project that is then paid back, with interest, over a maximum period of 7 years.
